S1 / S2 - Pupils cover a range of activities which relate to the 5 - 14 Expressive Arts document. Activities are taught in short 6 /7 blocks with classes rotating around different facilities. Activities taught are : athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, hockey / football, swimming and softball. Pupils are timetabled for two 50 - 55 minute periods every week. Differentiation is an important aspect of all lessons.

S3, S4 and S5 Core Physical Education - All S3 and S4 pupils are timetabled for two 50 - 55 minute periods of PE each week. Pupils come in half-year groups which allow the department to split the boys and girls into single sex groups in 3rd year. This also allows a range of options to be offered in 4th year.

In S3 classes rotate each facility for a period of 6 weeks. Within each facility the group decide which activities it will do and for how long. Activities covered are : aerobics / step, badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, hockey, water polo, fitness, rec. swimming, short tennis, softball, volleyball, table tennis and trampoline.

In S4 classes are given choices of activities from which they can make options according to interest. The activities offered are as in S3.

In S5 all pupils are timetabled for one 55 minute period of PE. They all come to the department at the same time and 5 members of staff are available then. Pupils are offered the same activities as in S3 with the addition of golf and skiing / snow boarding

Standard Grade Physical Education : this is taught through 6 practical activities - athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, life-saving and outdoor team games. These activities are taught in 6 week blocks throughout S3 and S4. At the end of each block pupils will

  1. be assessed in practical performance
  2. sit an end of block test on knowledge and understanding

Evaluation is assessed through formal examination in May of S3 and January of S4

Higher Still Physical Education : Higher and Intermediate 2 PE will be taught through 3 practical activities - badminton, basketball and football.

Performance (40% of the overall course grade) will be assessed in each activity with the higher 2 grades counting.
Analysis of performance (60% of the overall course grade) is taught through practical sessions in the above activities with classroom periods used to reinforce concepts and principles and also to review written work.

Practical Performance will be offered as an alternative to certificated PE. The basis of the course will form around basketball, fitness, football and badminton with other options decided upon by each year group as they start a new academic year. Performance will be assessed in each activity with the best grade counting.
