S1-3 BGE Physical Education

In S1-S3, as part of their Broad General Education, pupils will participate in a wide range of physical activities to improve their physical movement skills. They will also learn about how a range of other factors, such as co-operating, communicating, mental and emotional factors that impact their overall health and wellbeing.

S2/3 Elective Physical Education

Pupils have the opportunity to select PE as an elective in S2 and S3. They can choose from Creative and Aesthetic or Team Games/Individual. 

Creative and Aesthetic:

  • Dance
  • Cheerleading
  • Gymnastics
  • Trampoline

Team Games/Individual:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Swimming
  • Trampoline
  • Athletics

In S2, pupils will focus on the factors that impact performance. In S3, pupils build a foundation of knowledge that will help them be successful in the National 4/5 and Higher qualifications.

Senior Phase - National 4/5/Higher

If pupils choose PE as a Certificated subject at either National 4/5 or Higher level they will explore and develop their performance in more detail. These courses offer the opportunity for personalisation and choice as pupils can choose which activities they want to specialise in, they will then evaluate their performance, identifying areas for improvement and creating programmes to improve their performance. 

Pupils can either choose a Creative and Aesthetic or a Team Games/Individual pathway in the Senior Phase.

Leadership Award

We offer SCQF Leadership Level 5 or 6 through sport to pupils.

The progression from leadership is for:

  • Personal Development (SCQF level 6)
  • Employment
  • Career progression

Pupils build their skills for learning, work and life.

School of Sport

In S1, if pupils choose School of Football or School of Dance they will spend a term in the PE department developing their knowledge and skills of the sport.

At the end of S1, pupils will have the opportunity to trial/audition for the School of Football/Dance which they would be part of in S2 and S3.

School of Sport pupils will receive 2 periods of football/dance a week within their school curriculum.  

School of Dance will work towards an NPA by the end of S3.
School of Football will work towards coaching qualifications - e.g. Sports Leadership - by the end of S3.

School of Football curriculum:

  • Individual control
  • Attacking and defensive shaping
  • Developing an understanding of width and depth
  • Skill work – passing/shooting etc.
  • Coaching (S3)

School of Dance curriculum:

  • Jazz
  • Contemporary
  • Hip-Hop/Street
  • Fitness for dance
  • Alternative techniques

Senior Core Physical Education

In S4-S6 Core PE pupils will be given the opportunity to further enhance their physical movement skills in activities of their choice.
