Alternative Curriculum
ASDAN -
Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network
The
Asdan Award Scheme offers some pupils in Bo'ness Academy an alternative
to the traditional Standard Grade courses of study. The course is a flexible,
activity based programme consisting of a series of challenges. The award
is designed to develop, assess and accredit Key Skills and
it places strong emphasis on negotiation, co-operation and rewarding
achievement. It is also about developing independence and self-confidence,
about learning from others and finding out how the world operates. It's
aim is to enable the participant to understand themselves and others
better and to become more prepared for making the transition to adult
life.
How does it work ?
Credits are awarded as different challenges are
completed. These credits build towards the final award. For successful
completion of the Award students will need to complete 2 credits
showing evidence, planning, recording and reviewing. Evidence
of completed challenges, be it photographs of events, certificates
or written work is amassed in a record book and assessed by a
teacher. There is no examination.

What are the Challenges
?
There are 12 areas of study (modules) we can
select from :
Information Handling Sport & Leisure
The Environment
Health & Survival
Home Management Expressive
Arts
The Community Technology
Number Handling World
of Work
Each module is divided into 2 or 3 sections. It
is within these sections that your series of challenges are set.
For example one of the challenges in the Sport and Leisure module
requires you to make a chart to show how you spend your leisure
time during the week. You then have to compare it with the rest
of the class and give a short talk about how you spend your leisure
time. |
What
are Key Skills ?
In short Key Skills are the widely recognised
skills that you will be encouraged to develop whilst completing
your award. Skills such as problem solving, communication, working
with others, application of number and information technology
are skills which are highly valued by employers and Institutions
of Further Education. |
