Halloween in the English Dept
A group of approx 60 pupils travelled to the
Edinburgh Lyceum to watch a performance of Macbeth on Wednesday 17th
September

years enjoy whiteboard activities to improve literacy
from Nintendos to
Jingles 
Central FM Radio Jingle Competition
Ms McIntyre's pupils enjoyed a workshop from staff
at Central FM Radio Station to give them tips on creating their very
own jingle as part of an anti-litter campaign. They worked tirelessly
and you can listen
to their efforts here . The jingle will be aired
from Mon 27th October and you can vote on line until Sunday 19th
October. The winning school will be notified on Monday 20th October.
Prizes for the best jingle include money for winning school, music
vouchers for the pupils involved and a visit from Nemesis, the street
dancing group featured on Britain's Got Talent

The Red Book Award 2008

This all girls class were delighted to learn that the
book they will be delivering a presentation on is "Girls are Worse
Than Boys" by Catherine Macphail

The Kinneil DVD has been completed and will
be enjoyed by many a visitor to Kinneil House. Many thanks to Miss
Henderson and Mr Whitton and to Mrs Provan for all the technical
help

Whaling Update - Dr Stephen Potts has visited
the Academy to review some of the creative writing on "The
Orkney Sea Monster! He will provide further guidance on creative
writing skills and the finished works will be displayed in the school
library as well as NLS. Mr Anderson has taken on this project as
Miss Cairney has moved school. Dr Potts will also offer some valuable
advice to Advanced Higher English students |

Scots Aware - Mrs Robertson's S2 class will
soon be enhancing their knowledge of Scots language thanks to a
series of workshops provided by Mr Andrew Philip. Workshops will
hopefully start after the October break and should run for approximately
6 weeks |

Strengthening links with China - We
are delighted to welcome Luo Qingli to Bo'ness Academy : she
teaches English to students in China and is looking forward to
working with pupils in our school. She is currently working with
Ms McIntyre in the English Dept on a media unit of the very popular
Chinese film "Beijing
Bicycle" She has also observed and assisted in other classes
within the department. As well as teaching English Qingli aims
to work with various other departments such as Art and Modern
Languages. She will be at Bo'ness Academy until the end of the
summer term 2009.

EXCURSIONS
The next excursion will be on December 8th 2008 when
a group of S2 pupils head for Edinburgh Lyceum to watch a performance
of "The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe"

The English Department have obtained many great resources
from Blast-Off
Books. Staff from Blast-Off Books have also visited the school during
author visits to allow pupils to purchase recommended books.
Author visits to date include Eleanor Updale, Catherine McPhail and Catherine
Forde. We also aim to schedule more visits from a variety of writers who
will also provide workshops for pupils.

In addition to offering supported study in school pupils
are encouraged to study at their own pace via a variety of sources. BBC
Bitesize is a recommended revision website
The English Department would like to thank Mrs Pollock, the school
librarian for her assistance in producing poetry booklets and booklets
of a variety of written work. Copies of both booklets are available
to parents for a small fee.
