As a department we aim to foster a wide range of language skills involving listening, talking, reading and writing.

We aim to demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for our subject and encourage pupils to communicate with each other in a purposeful way.

We look forward to educating your child to the best of their ability at Bo’ness Academy. Nevertheless, we do acknowledge that education begins in the home and that families play a big part in this process. Working in partnership is key to helping a child progress.

Here are some areas you can help your child at home

organise schoolbagsOrganisation

Ensuring your child is organised is one of the key areas: Encourage them to:
  • Carry the correct equipment: pencil, books etc. carry pencils and pens
  • Carry their bag daily.
  • Organise their bag the night before.
  • Use their homework diary – replacements are available for a small fee.bring the correct books
  • Complete their homework.
  • Meet deadlines. meet deadlines
  • Be punctual.

readingReading

This is the key to many subject areas: encourage and support your child to read as much as possible: books, newspapers, magazines indeed anything! Always be positive and if you can share the experience of reading, then all the better.

writingWriting

At any time feel free to read over what your child has written – again be supportive and positive. Highlight the good aspects and stress them more than dwelling on the weaker areas: 2 for 1 is a good balance – 2 positives to 1 point for improving.

talkingTalking

Talking is crucial to all aspects of English from 5 – 14 to Higher. If your child has a talk to prepare, please encourage him or her by hearing their talk and, yet again, being positive about their performance. For many children, it is all a question of confidence. Consider the quality of what they say, how they say it and body language/eye contact.

Homework

Samples of homework tasks
