The schools Community Café is very much a reflection of the community spirit that Bo’ness enjoys. The Community Café runs every Wednesday in the school and brings together young and old in a pleasant and warm atmosphere. Mrs Provan (Senior Technician) and Ms O’Neill (Support for Learning Assistant) have been part of the Community Café project from the outset and do a sterling job each week.
Each week a group of pupils will prepare food and serve this to local residents and school staff members. Many of the visitors to the Café are retired and this gives them a nice opportunity to come into the school and enjoy lunch. Our pupils are given a superb opportunity to develop their own skills which we believe enhances their learning as well as providing them with valuable life skills that can be used to help them on their way to sustainable positive destinations when they leave school. The pupils develop vital teamwork and communication skills as they are the main driving force behind the success of the café under the watchful eye of Mrs Provan and Ms O’Neill. Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious for visitors into the school and creates enjoyment for all. The café also provides many staff with their lunch on a Wednesday and it is a great opportunity for staff to mix not just amongst themselves but also with the pupils and the local residents.
The whole Community Café project though relies heavily on its strong relationship with Tesco and Fareshare. Each Monday the school will receive communication from Fareshare to advise us if Tesco have food available. Mrs Provan and Ms O’Neill will then go to Tesco on a Monday evening to collect this food. Once the food is collected it will be taken to the school where it will be labelled and appropriately stored. Any additional food that we receive will then be offered to our Food and Consumer Technology department who will then use this to create a variety of dishes with pupils. Within the Café there is a set menu each week and occasionally depending on the food available there will be some specials offered. The food supplied through the relationship with Tesco and Fareshare goes a long way and really allows a community to come together each Wednesday.
Tesco National TV Advert
In summer 2017, the Community Cafe featured in a national television advert through our partnership with Tesco. The advert can viewed in the link below and there are also links to some of the press coverage of the advert which was officially launched at an event in the Scottish Parliament.
