Pupil Work Area 2007 - 2008
Pupils
at Bo’ness Academy had a whale of a time during a recent visit to
the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The second year class attended a workshop led by children’s
author Dr Stephen Potts and gained an insight into what it would have
been like to be part of a crew on a Bo’ness whaling ship. Pupils
also had the opportunity to handle rare books worth thousands of pounds
and to survey old maps of Bo’ness. To inspire creativity, part
of the `Orkney sea monster` was on display, and pupils are now determined
to discover the origins of the beast. Further writing workshops are
to be held in the school, with the end results put on permanent display
in the NLS as well as Bo’ness Library.
As well as this, other second year pupils have been
extremely productive, working collaboratively with staff from Kinneil
House to produce a guide to the attraction which will be suitable for
Primary Four pupils.
Further up the school, pupils have benefited from the
expertise of Janet Smythe from Blast-Off Books, who visited the school
to present a selection of texts suitable for personal studies, a compulsory
component of the Higher Still English Course.
Bo'ness Academy Buddies at the Scottish Parliament

On the 12 December 2007 Buddies Ashleigh Meikle, Hannah
Myles, Lisa Drysdale, Samantha Denton, Carlie-Ann Chuchla and Vicki
Paterson attended the Barnardo Scotland's Celebration of Volunteers
at the Scottish Parliament.
The girls were perfect ambassadors for Bo'ness Academy.
Ashleigh spoke to the delegates about her duties as a Buddy and her
responsibilities towards younger pupils at the Academy. Many of the
delegates complimented her on her speech.
The girls were introduced to Fiona Hyslop, Stephen Nicol,
Jack Mc Connell and many other MSPs. Samantha presented a bouquet to
Muriel Gray who was the MC for the evening and the Buddies were able
to chat and have photos taken with her. The pupils were also given the
opportunity to meet Martin Crew Scottish Divisional Director of Barnardo's.
Near the end of the evening Carlie-Ann was asked if she would entertain
the guests and she did with a fantastic rendition of "Somewhere Over
the Rainbow" which was a wonderful climax to a great evening.
I felt very proud of the girls and their work in the
Academy. During the course of the evening, they received personal praise
for their dedication and involvement with younger pupils. They were
a credit to Bo'ness Academy - by Linda Assur - Barnardo's

KINNEIL PROJECT
Miss Henderson and Mr Whitton's 2nd year pupils in the English
Department are currently involved in the creation of a DVD about
the Romans and their influence upon local people around the Kinnneil
area. The target audience for this project will be primary 4 pupils.
The pupils will be able to access the DVD whenever they visit
Kinneil where the Roman Fort stood and learn something about how
the Romans lived and worked in an entertaining way through a series
of monologues and drama scripts written and performed by Bo'ness
Academy pupils themselves.
See the preparations
The project should be completed by the end of the summer term

who took part in Falkirk Council's annual Red Book Award. A small

the part of the crocodile and Emma Brown who stepped in at the
last moment as the main character.

Our trip to the Botanic Gardens
I was really excited to have the opportunity
to visit the Chinese exhibition at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens!
We arrived at the Gardens in high spirits as
the minibus ride had been great fun. As we entered the Gardens
we were greeted by our friendly tour guide who showed us around
the beautiful glasshouses.
The atmosphere was amazing - the warm smell
of plants and the glow from the Chinese Lanterns gave the tour
a very exotic feeling. Also the sound effects that followed
you around the dimly lit and misty rooms made the whole experience
one to remember.
I thoroughly enjoyed my day at the Botanic Garden;
from the many photo opportunities to the floating of the origami
flowers on the pond, every moment was special.

speaking workshop held at Falkirk Town Hall. The event took
place on Wednesday 19th September and our pupils displayed their
current oratory skills by delivering a brief presentation. They
were then given tips and guidance to use in future presentations.
Overall the pupils felt this was a very worthwhile activity
to attend.

Ms McIntyre's S2 class have been selected to pilot the use
of Nintendo in class. The aim of this project is to enhance
the learning experiences for pupils through use of a range of
ICT equipment. The consoles were supplied by L.T.S. and were

Several members of staff from various departments accompanied
by some pupils attended the Falkirk Council's ICT Event on Thursday
24/04/08. the event was held at Carronvale House, Larbert and
was an opportunity to see the wide range of ICT being used in
all schools within Falkirk Authority.
This event has been a competition for the last few years however
with the growing increase in ICT it was becoming impossible
for judges to select winners so it was changed to a display
of good practice!
