The Kinneil Project

Miss Henderson and Mr Whitton's 2nd year pupils in the English Department are currently involved in the creation of a DVD about the Romans and their influence upon local people around the Kinnneil area. The target audience for this project will be primary 4 pupils.

The pupils will be able to access the DVD whenever they visit Kinneil where the Roman Fort stood and learn something about how the Romans lived and worked in an entertaining way through a series of monologues and drama scripts written and performed by Bo'ness Academy pupils themselves.

Testudo

When Roman soldiers went on the march they carried shields and were trained to go into "tortoise" formation on the shout of "Testudo" to prevent being hit and injured by enemy attack. Testudo means tortoise which is the shape seen when the call went out. Pupils practised putting the shields into the correct shape then were marched round the rugby pitch by Centurian Gillespie who made them practice the routine until perfect
