The second year class attended a workshop led by children’s author Dr Stephen Potts and gained an insight into what it would have been like to be part of a crew on a Bo’ness whaling ship. Pupils also had the opportunity to handle rare books worth thousands of pounds and to survey old maps of Bo’ness. To inspire creativity, part of the `Orkney sea monster` was on display, and pupils are now determined to discover the origins of the beast. Further writing workshops are to be held in the school, with the end results put on permanent display in the NLS as well as Bo’ness Library.

As well as this, other second year pupils have been extremely productive, working collaboratively with staff from Kinneil House to produce a guide to the attraction which will be suitable for Primary Four pupils.

Further up the school, pupils have benefited from the expertise of Janet Smythe from Blast-Off Books, who visited the school to present a selection of texts suitable for personal studies, a compulsory component of the Higher Still English Course.

KINNEIL PROJECT

Miss Henderson and Mr Whitton's 2nd year pupils in the English Department are currently involved in the creation of a DVD about the Romans and their influence upon local people around the Kinnneil area. The target audience for this project will be primary 4 pupils.

The pupils will be able to access the DVD whenever they visit Kinneil where the Roman Fort stood and learn something about how the Romans lived and worked in an entertaining way through a series of monologues and drama scripts written and performed by Bo'ness Academy pupils themselves.

The project should be completed by the end of the summer term

Ms McIntyre's S2 class have been selected to pilot the use of Nintendo in class. The aim of this project is to enhance the learning experiences for pupils through use of a range of ICT equipment. more
